Ramos Strikes Late as Portugal Edge Croatia 2-1 in Dramatic World Cup Thriller

Portugal booked their place in the World Cup round of 16 after Goncalo Ramos scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to secure a 2-1 victory over Croatia in a tense round of 32 clash on Thursday night.

The match delivered high drama until the final whistle, with Croatia believing it had rescued a last-gasp equaliser before the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review. The decision sparked furious protests from Croatia supporters, who whistled loudly and threw bottles onto the field after Mario Pasalic’s effort was disallowed.

The contest also brought together two of football’s biggest veterans, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modrić. Despite being booed by Croatia fans whenever he touched the ball, Ronaldo remained composed. He delayed his run-up before calmly sending his penalty down the middle as the goalkeeper dived to his right. The goal not only levelled the match but also marked Ronaldo’s first-ever goal in the knockout stage of a World Cup. His night ended in the 81st minute when he was substituted.

With extra time looming, Portugal found its decisive moment in stoppage time. Goncalo Ramos rose to head home the winning goal, sealing a dramatic victory and sending Portugal into the next round.

Croatia’s hopes of forcing extra time appeared to be revived moments later when the ball found the back of the net. However, after a VAR review confirmed Pasalic was offside, the goal was ruled out, leaving the Croatian players and fans frustrated as the final whistle confirmed their elimination.
