Real Madrid secure comeback win in Madrid derby

Real Madrid secured a dramatic 3–2 victory over city rivals Atlético Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on Sunday, keeping their La Liga title hopes alive in a thrilling derby clash.

The hosts were forced to dig deep, playing the final stages with 10 men, but held on under intense late pressure to claim all three points.

Atlético had taken the lead in the first half through Ademola Lookman, whose 33rd-minute strike gave the visitors a deserved advantage heading into the break. 

Diego Simeone’s side looked composed and dangerous, building on their strong recent form against their rivals, including a commanding win in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

Real Madrid responded quickly after halftime, with Vinícius Júnior leveling the score from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute. 

Momentum swung further in the hosts’ favor just minutes later when Federico Valverde fired them into the lead in the 55th minute, sparking celebrations among the home fans.

However, Atlético refused to back down. Defender Nahuel Molina brought the visitors back on level terms in the 66th minute, setting up a tense finale. 

The decisive moment came in the 72nd minute when Vinícius Júnior struck again, restoring Real Madrid’s lead with his second goal of the night following an assist from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The match took another dramatic turn when Federico Valverde was shown a straight red card in the 77th minute for a foul, leaving Real Madrid to defend their slim advantage with 10 men. 

Atlético pushed relentlessly in the closing stages, with Julián Álvarez coming close to equalizing after hitting the post, while goalkeeper Andriy Lunin produced crucial saves to deny the visitors.

Despite the late onslaught, Real Madrid held firm to secure a vital win that keeps them within touching distance of league leaders FC Barcelona. 

The result not only boosts their title challenge but also delivers a significant psychological edge in one of Spain’s fiercest rivalries.
