Saviola names Lionel Messi’s successor as Argentina captain

Former Argentina international, Javier Saviola, has tipped Leandro Paredes as the ideal successor to Lionel Messi as Argentina captain, describing the midfielder as a “fantastic leader” capable of taking over when the legendary forward retires from international football.

Uncertainty still surrounds Messi’s international future, with the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner yet to confirm whether he will feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, expectations remain high that he will be included in Lionel Scaloni’s squad, especially after returning to competitive action with Inter Miami in 2026.

Messi, who inspired Argentina to glory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, has amassed 197 caps and 115 goals for his country.

With his enduring influence and form, there is even speculation that he could eventually reach the remarkable milestone of 1,000 career goals, similar to long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

Looking ahead to a future without Messi, Saviola highlighted Paredes’ leadership qualities as key to inheriting the captain’s armband.

He also pointed to other experienced figures such as Julian Alvarez, Nicolas Tagliafico, and Emiliano Martinez as potential candidates capable of guiding the national team.

“[Leandro] Paredes has a lot of personality. He’s a player who has been proving himself over the last few years and can become a fantastic captain. Julian [Alvarez], [Nicolas] Tagliafico, Dibu [Emi Martinez], I think that’s the kind of player we’re looking at.” Saviola said.

Despite the looming transition, Argentina remain confident of defending their world title in 2026.

Saviola believes the team has the quality and mentality to compete with leading nations like Spain, France, England, Portugal, and Germany on the biggest stage.

The upcoming tournament, scheduled from June 11 to July 19, could mark a historic farewell for several global icons.

Alongside Messi, stars like Neymar and Ronaldo are expected to be approaching their final appearances on the world stage, as a new generation prepares to take over international football.
