Sesko’s Last-Gasp Strike Extends Carrick’s Unbeaten Run in Dramatic London Draw

A dramatic stoppage-time goal from Benjamin Sesko rescued a vital point for Manchester United, preserving caretaker head coach Michael Carrick’s unbeaten start and denying West Ham United a precious victory in their fight to steer clear of relegation.

On a rain-soaked night in east London, Carrick’s side looked set for defeat after struggling to find rhythm for much of the contest. Having won his opening four matches in charge — a sequence that had eluded his predecessor Ruben Amorim — Carrick saw that perfect run come to an end, but he left the capital relieved rather than disappointed.

The first half offered little in the way of fluency. Both sides battled in difficult conditions, with clear chances at a premium. United came closest before the break when Luke Shaw met a cleverly delivered corner at close range, only for Aaron Wan-Bissaka to clear his effort off the line in a moment of sharp defensive awareness.

West Ham found their breakthrough five minutes after the restart. Shaw was unable to win a crucial challenge, allowing Tomas Soucek to slip away from Kobbie Mainoo and guide a composed finish inside the near post. The goal sent the home supporters into celebration and put Nuno Espirito Santo’s side on course for what would have been a fourth win in five league outings.

United believed they had equalized almost immediately when Casemiro headed beyond goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, but the effort was ruled out for offside, compounding the visitors’ frustration.

As time ticked away, Carrick introduced Sesko in search of inspiration. The Slovenian forward delivered in the 96th minute, reacting swiftly inside the box and firing high past Hermansen to snatch a dramatic draw.

West Ham were left to rue missed opportunities to extend their lead, while United escaped with a point that keeps Carrick’s unbeaten record intact — and maintains momentum, even if perfection slipped away in the pouring rain.
