UEFA Champions League: Manchester City battle Inter in season opener

The 2023 UEFA Champions League winner, Manchester City, will start this campaign opener at the Etihad against their opponents from the final, which was played in Istanbul—Inter Milan.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side claimed their first and only Champions League title after a second-half solitary strike from midfielder, Rodri.

On Wednesday, not only will they hope to get another win against the Nerazurri, but they will also expect to extend their 23-match unbeaten streak in the competition, having won sixteen and sharing the spoils on seven occasions.

And should they come out of Wednesday’s clash and that of October 1 against Slogan Bratislava unscathed, they will equal the longest unbeaten streak in the competition’s history set by rivals Manchester United (25) between 2007 and 2009.

City have had a terrific start to their domestic season, with four wins from their opening four matches in which they’ve scored eleven and conceded just three goals.

However, it’s worth mentioning that the Citizens do not have a rosy head-to-head record against teams from the Serie A, with meager five wins, five draws, and three losses from thirteen attempts.

City’s Wednesday’s opponents, Inter Milan, have also maintained an unbeaten start to their title defense in Italy, but their overall performances have been below par, with two wins and two draws from four league matches.

Inter Milan’s latest disappointment came on Sunday after their visit to Monza.

Simone Inzaghi’s side was on the cusp of their first loss of the campaign when Dany Mota headed Monza into a shocking lead with less than ten minutes from time before Denzel Dumfries came to their rescue, notching a needed equalizer seven minutes after to salvage a point for the reigning Italian champions.

They head into Wednesday’s contest seeking revenge against Man City following their 2023 Champions League final heartache and having lost only three of their last 20 Champions League matches (W11 D6).
