Germany and Bayern Munich star Jonas Urbig has suffered a capsule injury in his right knee, as confirmed by the Bavarian club this evening.
The injury was picked up while on international duty with the German national team on Thursday afternoon, March 26.
The 22-year-old shot-stopper will therefore miss the upcoming international matches against Switzerland and Ghana.
Speaking ahead of upcoming games Coach Julian Nagelsmann revealed the shot-stopper did very well in training, adding his exit from the team was more of a precautionary measure.
Further reports confirm that Urbig will leave Nagelsmann’s national team squad early and return to Munich.
The news comes as a blow to the young goalkeeper who could have been in line to earn his first senior cap for the DFB-elf.
Urbig has previously made 22 appearances for Germany at the underage level, of which eight have come at the U-21 grade.
This setback interrupts his momentum at a time when he was pushing for senior recognition.
To fill the position, FC Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen has been called up as his replacement for both fixtures, which are just days away.
The call-up provides the national team with immediate cover and maintains squad depth for the important friendlies.
While the injury is described as precautionary, it still requires careful management to ensure Urbig returns stronger.
Bayern Munich will now focus on his rehabilitation, hoping to have him back soon for club duties. The unfortunate incident reminds everyone of the serious physical risks players face even in training camps.
Supporters across Germany and beyond are disappointed but fully understand the need for caution with such a talented young prospect.
Urbig’s youth international experience has shown his potential, and many expect him to bounce back quickly.
The German football federation and Bayern will coordinate his recovery plan closely.
Nagelsmann’s squad now turns its attention to the matches without Urbig, relying on Dahmen to step up. This situation also opens opportunities for other goalkeepers in the system.
