Van Dijk assures that Trent’s exit won’t water down Liverpool’s title celebrations

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk insists that the departure of long-serving right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold will not overshadow the club’s upcoming Premier League title celebrations.

Despite confirming his exit at the end of June, reportedly to join Real Madrid, Van Dijk emphasized that the squad is fully focused on finishing the season strong and celebrating their success together.

Alexander-Arnold, 26, returned to the pitch for the first time since announcing his departure during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal. His appearance was met with a mixed reception from fans at Anfield, with some jeering the local hero. Van Dijk acknowledged the boos, stating that while such reactions can be tough, the team stands firmly behind Alexander-Arnold.

“He’s a fantastic player with exceptional qualities, and we’re gutted he’s leaving. But we want to lift the trophy with him on the 25th and celebrate in style. This should be a day for everyone involved, not just about one player’s future,” said Van Dijk

The Liverpool captain, who recently signed a new two-year deal, stressed the importance of unity as the Reds close out the season. The Reds will celebrate with an open-top bus parade for a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title for Liverpool; the bus parade will take place days after the trophy lift at Anfield.

Van Dijk also drew a line between his own contract extension and Alexander-Arnold’s decision to move on. He noted that while he personally chose to stay at Anfield, Alexander-Arnold may feel ready for a new challenge at one of the world’s biggest clubs. “Everyone has different journeys. He feels he’s done it all here, and maybe it’s time for something new.”

Despite the controversy, the focus remains on Liverpool’s final two games of the season. Van Dijk said the team will push to finish strong and ensure that Alexander-Arnold’s contribution to the club’s success over the past seven years is celebrated fittingly.
