Wolves beat defending Premier League champions

Wolverhampton Wanderers stunned reigning Premier League champions Liverpool with a dramatic 2-1 victory at Molineux, sealed by a stoppage-time winner from Andre.

In a result few predicted, the bottom-placed side claimed only their third league win of the season, sparking wild celebrations at the final whistle and dealing a significant blow to Liverpool’s title defence hopes.

The hosts had taken the lead through Rodrigo Gomes, who capitalised on a bright start to put Wolves ahead.

Liverpool, struggling for rhythm in the first half, gradually asserted themselves after the break as they searched for a response.

The visitors’ pressure eventually told when Mohamed Salah fired home to level the contest, ending his Premier League goal drought stretching back to November.

Salah’s equaliser shifted momentum and set up a frantic finale, with both sides pushing for a winner.

Liverpool twice went close from set-pieces, with Virgil van Dijk denied by a sharp save from Jose Sa.

Wolves, however, refused to settle for a point and continued to threaten on the counter-attack, leaving the game finely poised entering six minutes of added time.

The decisive moment arrived in the 94th minute. A poor clearance from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson dropped invitingly to Andre 20 yards from goal.

His strike took a wicked deflection off Joe Gomez, looping over the stranded Brazilian and into the net to send Molineux into bedlam. Wolves’ bench emptied in celebration as Liverpool’s players stood stunned.

The defeat highlighted a recurring issue for Liverpool, who have now conceded 14 goals in the final 15 minutes of second halves this season.

Manager Arne Slot could only watch on in disbelief as his side fell to a damaging loss against opponents who began the night propping up the table.

For Wolves and head coach Rob Edwards, the victory could prove a turning point in their campaign.

Beating the champions provides a major confidence boost in their battle to climb away from danger, while Liverpool are left to regroup quickly as their ambitions face an unexpected setback.
