World Cup set to showcase new generation of global stars

With less than a week remaining before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, anticipation is building for a tournament that will introduce a new generation of football stars to the biggest stage in the sport. 

Hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, the expanded 48-team competition will feature numerous high-profile players making their World Cup debuts after establishing themselves among the game’s elite.

Among the most eagerly awaited newcomers is Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, who will finally experience his first major international tournament. 

Despite his prolific record of 55 goals in 49 appearances for Norway, the Manchester City forward has never played at either a World Cup or European Championship. 

Haaland will be central to Norway’s hopes as they prepare to face Iraq, Senegal, and France in Group B.

Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal is another player expected to attract global attention. 

Already regarded as one of the world’s brightest talents, the 18-year-old arrives after starring in Spain’s successful Euro 2024 campaign. 

Germany will also look to debutant Florian Wirtz to inspire their challenge, with the creative midfielder hoping to make up for missing the 2022 tournament through injury.

Several established stars will also be making long-awaited World Cup bows. Colombia winger Luis Diaz finally gets his chance after his country failed to qualify four years ago, while France attacker Michael Olise arrives in top form following an outstanding season at club level. 

Portugal midfielder Joao Neves is similarly expected to play a key role after emerging as one of Europe’s most complete young midfielders.

Defending champions Argentina will introduce highly rated playmaker Nico Paz to the global audience, while hosts the United States will place considerable responsibility on striker Folarin Balogun to provide the goals needed for a deep tournament run. 

Turkey’s creative force Arda Guler also arrives with growing expectations after his impressive performances at Euro 2024 and breakthrough season with Real Madrid.

Rounding out the list is Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande, one of the most sought-after young talents in European football. 

The 19-year-old is expected to attract significant attention during the tournament as scouts from several major clubs continue to monitor his development.
