Johnson Wins 2020 Masters Championship

World number one, Dustin Johnson has added another title to his achievements this year after winning his first Masters championship

Johnson finished on Sunday at 20 under par, finishing the round four-under 68. Cameron Smith and Sungjae Im finished jointly at 15 under while Justin Thomas finished fourth at 12 under. Johnson is now the first world number one to win the Masters after Tiger Woods did it in 2002.

Johnson started the day with a four-shot lead from Saturday and did not fail to do justice with his advantage. He made par on the second hole, followed by a birdie on the third before he made a bogey on the fourth and fifth hole. By this time, Im and Smith were already closing in on him, shortening the lead.

A birdie at the sixth hole followed by a bogey from Im, saw Johnson shoot forward, tailed by Smith. Another bogey at the eighth hole saw Johnson continue to gap Smith. Johnson made par at the ninth, where Smith made a birdie but that did not change much as Smith made a bogey on the 11th.

Johnson then made a couple more pars before making three birdies in a row from the 13th to the 15th, giving him his four-shot lead back. Johnson then sailed to victory by making pars from the 16th to the 18th hole, finishing the tournament at 20 under, two shots better than the records held previously by Woods (1997) and Jordan Spieth (2015).

Johnson has now cemented his name as one of golf’s great with his stunning performance at Augusta National. It was not just the mere fact that he won but that he created a new record while doing it. Meanwhile, Woods, who entered the competition as the defending champion, finished 1 under par, together with Paul Casey and Lee Westwood. Bryson DeChambeau, who was expected to win the event as the favourite finished alone at under 2. Brooks Koepka and world number 2 Jon Rahm, finished tied at 10 under.
