Scheffler wins FedEx Cup title following Tour Championship victory on Sunday

Scottie Scheffler came from behind to win the Tour Championship on Sunday, closing with a 4-under 66 at East Lake Golf Club to claim the FedEx Cup title for the second time in three years.

The world number one started the final round three shots behind Viktor Hovland but produced the steadiest golf when conditions became difficult. 

Scheffler finished at 16-under 264, three shots clear of Hovland, with Ryan Gerard taking third place and Rory McIlroy ending the week tied for fourth at 11 under.

The victory capped another strong finish to the season for Scheffler, who arrived in Atlanta after an eight-shot win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship earlier in the playoffs. 

While he spent much of the year collecting runner-up finishes and top-five results, he still managed to deliver when the FedExCup was on the line.

Scheffler wasted little time making up ground on Sunday. He birdied the second hole after a precise tee shot and added another at the fourth to pull level with Hovland. 

The pair remained locked together through much of the round before Scheffler finally moved ahead on the back nine.

A bogey at the 14th briefly opened the door, but Scheffler responded with one of the defining moments of the tournament. 

After finding a fairway bunker with a 317-yard drive on the par-4 16th, he played his approach to 11 feet and converted the birdie putt to restore control of the championship.

Hovland could not find an answer. The Norwegian missed a birdie chance on the same hole before dropping a shot at the 17th after finding trouble off the tee. That allowed Scheffler to build a cushion he would not surrender over the closing stretch.

The title completed a notable turnaround from the previous week, when Scheffler battled illness during the BMW Championship and finished tied for 12th. 

He arrived at East Lake healthy enough to mount one final charge and produced the only under-par round among the leading contenders on Sunday.
