The new tournament is expected to rival the PGA and to offer better incentives. It is expected to have a purse of $10 million every week, accommodating 48 players. It is also expected to run from January to September every year, with 18 events in all.
Woods has expressed his openness in considering the offer to join, seeing it as something that was bound to happen at some point. Started almost 100 years ago, the PGA, or Professional Golfers’ Association (of America), is the main organizer of most golfing events in the United States. For decades, they have organized many events for various categories of golfers, making it easy for them to compete as often as they like. This has also made it possible for many golfing events to be held all year round.
For now, no one is sure if the Premier Golf League would become a reality as it expected to kick off in 2022. Woods admitted, after some speculation by people outside, that he was indeed asked to join and that his team was aware of it. But he is still waiting to get as much information as he can about the event and to be fully sure it would even kick-off.
However, Woods seemed pleased about the idea which the new tournament is based off. For him, he sees it as a way for players, especially the big ones, to compete for more. According to him, “…this is a natural evolution, whether or not things like this are going to happen.”
The Premier Golf League would be played based on teams, and they are expected to be 12 in number. Indications show that organizers of the new competition are considering Woods as the owner of one of the teams.
They may have also approached other top players too, but no one else has come out to confirm it. In that light, the PGA Commissioner, Jay Monahan, and the European Tour chief executive, Keith Philip, have come out to warn their golfers to think about it well.
