Antonelli set to win title in Austin if conditions are right

Kimi Antonelli could become Formula 1 world champion at the United States Grand Prix in Austin this weekend, with Sunday’s race offering the earliest mathematical opportunity for the Mercedes driver to seal the 2026 title.

He arrives at the Circuit of the Americas with 340 points, 102 clear of teammate George Russell and 111 ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.

The United States Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday, 25 October, and is the first race after the Singapore round.

With six rounds remaining after Austin, Antonelli needs to leave Texas with at least a 125-point lead over every rival to be mathematically certain of the championship.

The simplest route is an Antonelli win. A win would take him to 365 points, creating a 127-point advantage over Russell and 136 over Hamilton. Russell would then need to finish ninth or lower, while Hamilton would have to place fifth or lower.

If those results occur, no driver could close the gap sufficiently across the remaining races.

One important detail: if Russell finishes exactly ninth, He would trail Antonelli by precisely 125 points, meaning the title would be decided on countback.

Antonelli would still become champion because a win in Austin would give him nine Grand Prix victories for the season, compared with a maximum of eight for Russell.

Antonelli’s position has been built on a remarkably strong first full season with Mercedes. The 19-year-old has recorded eight wins, including early successes in China, Japan, Miami, Canada and Monaco, and he has remained at the top of the standings since the opening phase of the campaign.

His advantage widened in Singapore despite a difficult weekend. Antonelli finished third after dealing with brake concerns and track-limits issues, but Russell’s lower score let the Italian extend his lead from 89 points to 102.

Austin also offers the Italian teenager a chance to make history. If Antonelli clinches the title, he would become the youngest Formula 1 world champion, surpassing Sebastian Vettel, who won his first championship in 2010 at 23.

At 19, Antonelli would achieve the feat more than three years before Vettel.

If the required results don’t fall Antonelli’s way in Texas, his next opportunity comes in the following round in Mexico.

But Austin gives him the first genuine chance to end the championship early and complete one of the most striking rookie-to-champion rises in recent Formula 1 history.
