Verstappen not excited to drive this season’s car

Ahead of the new Formula 1 season, four-time world champion Max Verstappen, has voiced his concerns over the state of new cars.

The 2026 season would introduce new regulations that would not only affect the way the cars are designed but how they perform as well.

Some of the expected changes include smaller and narrower cars, revamped wing design, and an engine powered by both petrol and electric in equal splits.

If outsiders needed any hint as to how different things seemed, the Red Bull driver has revealed that he is not so excited about getting behind the wheels, comparing the car’s performance to those in Formula E, a motorsport for strictly electric cars.

The Dutchman expressed his opinion during the ongoing pre-season testing, where he noted that the new changes to the cars will not allow him to drive like he used to. In his words: “As a driver, the feeling is not very Formula 1 like. It feels a bit more like Formula E on steroids.

But the rules are the same for everyone, so you have to deal with that. And that’s also not my problem, because I’m all for that, equal chances, I don’t mind that. But as a pure driver, I enjoy driving flat out, and at the moment you cannot drive like that

The pre-season testing offers drivers a chance to explore the new cars and take note of the changes made before the season starts.

It’s obvious that Verstappen, having driven the car on the first day of testing, was not so pleased with the handling.

His conclusion is, “Driving wise, not so fun. But at the same time, I also know what is at stake with the team, our own engine, and seeing the excitement of the people.

Of course, when I sit in the car, I will always give it my very best. They know that. But, excitement level’s not so high, to drive.”

Still, Verstappen believes that the good drivers will adapt to the new regulations as they battle for the championship in the new season.

For fans, the prospect of things not being business-as-usual means things would play out differently on the grid than it has in recent seasons, which is definitely worth watching out for.
