Lewis Hamilton has tied Michael Schumacher’s record of most wins in a venue after winning his 8th Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, July 19. Max Verstappen of Team Red Bull came second despite a pre-race crash, pushing second Mercedes driver, Valterri Bottas, to third place. This is Hamilton’s second victory of the season.
Hamilton started the race on a high note, taking the lead from the start. He maintained his lead and even had time a pit stop for fresh, dry tyres. He then went on to battle for the bonus title of the fastest lap, which he won with an 8-second lead. Coming right behind him was Verstappen, whose win was an absolute miracle.
He crashed his car and broke the nose after diving too hard before the race began. A quick but thorough work by the Red Bull mechanics was able to ensure that Verstappen returns to the race, where he started at number 7.
Bottas failed to re-enact what happened last week when he and Hamilton came second and first, respectively, as he was denied the chance by Verstappen. He was in course for the second place, having moved even before the starting lights went out. He then stopped quickly again, saying he was reacting to a light on his dashboard. It is a real surprise he was not penalized for the move.
Hamilton, who won last week’s Styrian Grand Prix, spoke after the race on his win. He said, “Round One had multiple different punches that I wasn’t perhaps ready for, but I refocused, and the last two have been fantastic. This weekend, we’ve just been on point throughout, so we need to try and keep this up.” Team Mercedes has been very dominant this season, with both drivers finishing in the top three in the last two races.
Sebastian Vettel was the only Team Ferrari driver go earn points after coming 6th with Charles Leclerc finishing at 11th. Meanwhile, Lance Stroll gave his best performance since joining Racing Point last year by finishing the race at 4th position.
The next race would hold in Britain on August 2.
