UFC lightweight champion, Jon Jones, was arrested by police authorities in Albuquerque on Thursday morning on multiple charges including DWI and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
It was the sound of gunshots that drew the attention of the police to the spot around 1 A.M in the morning only to find Jones alone in his car.
Initial interrogations by the police did not lead to anything as Jones kept insisting he had no knowledge about the gunshot even though he an unlicensed gun was later found underneath his seat. He appeared inebriated and admitted that he had been drinking before driving and was intending to drive again.
He was then issued a series of tests, including a breathalyser test, and he failed all of them. It was the moment he was arrested that the gun was found under his seat.
Officer Jason Brown, one of the policemen on duty that night said he spotted “green, leafy substance on his shirts and pants, consistent with marijuana.” A bottle of Recuerdo was also found by his side. Jones was also unable to produce his proof of insurace, which was another offence.
Although Jones was released the same day and would be back for bonds arraignment on the 8th of April, his chances of getting of lightly are very slim because this is not the first time. Back in 2012, Jones was charged guilty of driving under the influence after crashing his Bentley.
He pleaded guilty to the charge and had his driver’s license suspended for 6 months. In 2015 again, he was back in the court for a hit-and-run charge. As usual, he cooperated with the authorities and was giving 18 months of probation.
Now he has faced another arrest, the third one in 8 years, and things are not looking pretty. A DWI is always a serious case and Jones could risk having his driver’s license taken completely.
If his first case is brought up, Jones could risk spending a compulsory 90 days in jail. As a fighter, Jones has been steady winning fights and the latest was in UFC 247 where he defeated Dominick Reyes.
