Williams sisters receive US Open Doubles Wildcard

Serena and Venus Williams will reunite at the US Open after receiving a wildcard into the women’s doubles tournament, giving the sisters another chance to compete together at a Grand Slam event.

The USTA confirmed the wildcard on Wednesday, with the Williams sisters returning to the US Open doubles draw for the first time since 2022.

Both women will team up again just weeks after reuniting at the Cincinnati Open, where they played together competitively for the first time in almost four years.

The sisters have enjoyed extraordinary success as a doubles team. They have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together, including US Open championships in 1999 and 2009. Venus and Serena also share six Wimbledon doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals.

Their last appearance together at the US Open came in 2022, when Serena played what many thought was the final tournament of her career.

The sisters lost in the third round that year, having entered the event with a 27-7 record across their nine US Open doubles appearances.

Wimbledon was their first attempt to team up this year, but things did not go as planned. Serena and Venus had received a wildcard for the doubles tournament, but Serena withdrew after suffering a knee injury during her singles campaign.

They eventually reunited at Cincinnati, where Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns defeated them 6-2, 1-6, (10-8) in the opening round.

Serena has since continued her comeback at the US Open.

The 44-year-old returned to Grand Slam competition this summer after nearly four years away and was also awarded a wildcard to compete in the revamped mixed doubles event alongside Carlos Alcaraz.

The pair reached the quarter-finals before losing to Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli.

Venus, meanwhile, will compete in both singles and doubles in New York. The 46-year-old received a wildcard into the women’s singles main draw earlier this month and is preparing for another appearance at the tournament where she won the singles title in 2000 and 2001.
