Ja Morant did not need extended minutes to make a powerful statement. Back in action after missing six games with a right calf injury, the Memphis Grizzlies star delivered a commanding all-round performance, finishing with 24 points and 13 assists in a 126-109 win over the Orlando Magic on Sunday.
Playing under a minutes restriction, Ja Morant instantly transformed the tempo and confidence of a Memphis side that had struggled in recent weeks. The victory was just the Grizzlies’ third in their last 10 games, underlining the immediate impact of the two-time All-Star’s return.
Head coach Tuomas Iisalo said the medical feedback following Morant’s return to practice had been encouraging, but cautioned against rushing the 26-year-old back into heavy workloads. Iisalo noted that extended absences often require careful reintegration, a sentiment reflected in Morant’s controlled but decisive outing.
Despite ongoing trade speculation surrounding the franchise guard, Morant made his stance clear after the game. Referencing a tattoo of the team logo on his back, he reaffirmed his commitment to Memphis Grizzlies, calling himself “a very loyal guy” and leaving little doubt about where he wants his future to be.
The timing of Morant’s return was particularly significant. Memphis had dropped the opening game of a European doubleheader against the Orlando Magic in Berlin, a game Morant missed as he continued his recovery. He returned for the London fixture and expressed appreciation for the support he received overseas, describing basketball as “very therapeutic” and emphasizing the pride he feels representing Memphis on a global stage.
The Grizzlies raced to a 33-point lead in the first half and, unlike in Berlin where a 20-point advantage slipped away, they maintained control throughout. Morant credited the coaching staff for putting players in the right positions and said his focus was simply on making the right play, whether scoring or facilitating.
Morant’s absence in Germany had been felt beyond Memphis. NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in Berlin that he was disappointed Morant could not feature, noting the guard’s strong global following.
The point guard is in the third year of a five-year, $197.2 million contract and is earning approximately $39.4 million this season. He is averaging 19 points and 7.6 assists this campaign, with career numbers of 22.4 points and 7.4 assists per game.
Sunday marked Morant’s first appearance since December 2, when he logged 31 minutes in a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. His return, and his performance, suggested the Grizzlies’ season may finally be regaining momentum.
