San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has received a warning from the NBA for violating league media access rules after declining to speak with reporters following Game 5 of the Western Conference finals, according to ESPN.
The incident came after the Spurs suffered a 127-114 defeat to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night, leaving San Antonio trailing 3-2 in the best-of-seven playoff series. Following the game, a Spurs spokesperson informed reporters that Wembanyama would not be available for media duties, prompting the league’s response.
The 22-year-old center endured a difficult outing despite finishing with 20 points in 38 minutes. Wembanyama struggled from the field, converting just four of his 15 attempts and missing all five shots from beyond the three-point line. However, he remained flawless from the free-throw line, knocking down all 12 attempts.
The French star also contributed six rebounds, two steals and three blocks, though his impact on the boards was limited early in the contest, collecting only one rebound during the first half as Oklahoma City controlled large portions of the game.
The NBA has previously penalised players for failing to fulfil post-game media obligations during the playoffs. In 2023, Jimmy Butler III, then with the Miami Heat, and Dillon Brooks, who was playing for the Memphis Grizzlies at the time, were both fined $25,000 for similar violations.
The warning issued to Wembanyama comes as a surprise to many given his recent recognition for professionalism and media conduct. Earlier this season, he won the prestigious Magic Johnson Award from the Professional Basketball Writers Association. The annual award honours the NBA player who best combines excellence on the court with cooperation and dignity in dealing with the media and public.
Wembanyama has continued to establish himself as one of the league’s brightest young stars. During the current playoff run, he has led the Spurs in scoring, rebounds and blocks, averaging 22.9 points, 11.1 rebounds and 3.7 blocks across 15 postseason games.
His dominance has extended throughout the season. The former first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft averaged a league-leading 3.1 blocks per game during the regular season and was rewarded with several major honours. Wembanyama was named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year, earned unanimous selection to the All-Defensive First Team and secured a place in the All-NBA First Team. He has also been selected as an All-Star in each of the past two seasons.
With the Spurs now facing elimination, attention will quickly shift back to the court as Wembanyama looks to help San Antonio force a decisive Game 7 against the Thunder.
