Rockets Lock Up Amen Thompson With Five-Year, $208 Million Extension

The Houston Rockets have secured one of the central pieces of their young core for the long term, agreeing to a five-year, $208 million rookie-scale extension with forward Amen Thompson.

The agreement was reached Thursday and later made official by the Rockets, ensuring the 23-year-old remains a major part of Houston’s plans as the franchise looks to build on last season’s fifth-place finish in the Western Conference.

Thompson has steadily expanded his role since Houston selected him with the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. His progress continued during the 2025-26 season, when he posted career highs across several categories.

He averaged 18.3 points, 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals while also leading the NBA in minutes played. Those numbers added another dimension to a player who had already developed a reputation as one of the league’s top defensive talents.

Thompson earned First Team All-Defense honors in 2024-25, and his combination of defense, versatility and improving offensive production has made him a key figure in Houston’s lineup.

Rockets General Manager Rafael Stone pointed to Thompson’s competitive approach and continued development while announcing the deal.

“Amen represents everything we want our organization to be about,” Stone said. “He has elite two-way ability, a toughness and the will to outwork his peers, and he competes in every circumstance. Year over year, he’s improved in every facet of his game, and we know his best basketball is ahead of him.”

The extension also gives Houston additional long-term stability as it attempts to move higher in a competitive Western Conference. Much of the roster that helped the Rockets finish fifth last season is returning.

Thompson will continue to play a prominent role alongside Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun, giving Houston a core capable of contributing in different ways on both ends of the floor.

The Rockets also strengthened their roster during the offseason with the additions of Marcus Smart and Bogdan Bogdanović. Fred VanVleet’s return to health provides another boost as Houston looks to take another step forward.

For Thompson, the $208 million commitment represents a major vote of confidence after three seasons of development. For the Rockets, it keeps one of their premier young players in place as they continue building around a roster designed to compete in the West.
