Bayern Munich failed to score in a competitive fixture for the first time since July 2025 as Vincent Kompany’s side were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Schalke.
The reigning Bundesliga champions dominated large periods yet could not convert their superiority into goals, finishing the match with 1.9 expected goals and six big chances that went begging.
Kompany praised Schalke’s defensive organization while openly admitting his team should have been more clinical in front of goal.
Bayern’s previous competitive blank had come in a 0-2 Club World Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on 5 July 2025; their last goalless Bundesliga outing was a 0-0 draw at Bayer Leverkusen in February 2025.
Former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius proved instrumental, producing five important saves to help Schalke end a run of twelve consecutive defeats against Bayern in all competitions.
The result cost Bayern the top spot in the Bundesliga for the first time since September 2024. The last occasion another side led the table was after matchday two of the 2024-25 season, when Heidenheim briefly occupied first place.
Nevertheless, Kompany was quick to acknowledge the hosts’ contribution while maintaining that Bayern had still delivered a solid overall performance.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, the Belgian coach said every game had its own story and that, unfortunately, on this occasion the story was that his side could not score.
He added that this took nothing away from Schalke’s display, stressing that the home team had fought extremely hard and closed the spaces very effectively.
Manuel Neuer highlighted the contribution of his compatriot Karius, who had previously expressed a desire to return to the Germany squad, describing him as the player of the match.
The Bayern captain insisted there would be no panic at the club following the dropped points.
Attention now turns to the UEFA Champions League, where Bayern host Bodø/Glimt in their opening league-phase fixture.
