Seth Curry’s NBA Future Uncertain as Warriors Appear to Move in Different Direction

Seth Curry faces an uncertain NBA future after the Golden State Warriors appeared to move away from the possibility of bringing the veteran guard back for another season.

Golden State has spent the past week shaping its training camp roster, adding former Dallas Mavericks guard Brandon Williams, veteran forward Georges Niang and former first-round pick Dalen Terry. Those moves leave limited room for Curry, with no reported interest from other teams two months into free agency.

The 36-year-old had made it clear that he would welcome another opportunity with the Warriors despite enduring an injury-hit campaign last season.

“I mean, absolutely. I wasn’t able to do everything I wanted to do on the floor last year, but I always got a lot of love for the organization, the fans — first class. Like I said, it’s disappointing what I dealt with last season,” Curry said in an interview with NBC Sports’ Monte Poole last month.

Golden State, however, appears to have chosen different options while finalizing its roster. Williams offers a younger presence in the backcourt and more ability to create off the dribble, while Niang provides the Warriors with an experienced catch-and-shoot option in the frontcourt.

Curry’s limited availability last season appears to have worked against him despite his impressive production when healthy. He played only 10 games but averaged 7.1 points in just over 13 minutes per appearance and shot an outstanding 48 per cent from three-point range.

Those numbers suggested Curry could still contribute as a rotation player, particularly for a team needing perimeter shooting. His lack of games, however, represented a significant concern for a Warriors roster already containing several older and injury-prone players.

Finding another NBA opportunity could now prove difficult for the 6-foot-1 guard as he attempts to extend his career into a 13th season. Rebuilding teams may prefer younger players, while contenders could look for options with a stronger recent record of availability.

A return to one of his former teams, the Philadelphia 76ers, has been suggested as a potential destination. That possibility, though, appears less likely following Philadelphia’s signing of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

Curry’s elite shooting ability could still attract interest before the season, but with Golden State seemingly moving forward without him and no obvious destination emerging elsewhere, the veteran guard faces an uphill battle to continue his NBA career.
