Bruno Fernandes Hat-Trick Inspires Manchester United to 5-2 Comeback Win Over Ipswich

Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as Manchester United recovered from an early setback to secure an emphatic 5-2 Premier League victory over Ipswich Town.

Ipswich, fresh from beating Sunderland on their return to the top flight, made an impressive start and took the lead through Leif Davis. Abdul Fatawu did brilliantly on the wing before Davis finished with a fine half-volley.

United were initially under pressure, with goalkeeper Senne Lammens forced into action as Ipswich threatened to extend their advantage. However, the contest changed dramatically when Marcelino Nunez slipped while attempting to deal with the ball following a United corner.

Matheus Cunha took advantage and supplied Fernandes, who produced the equaliser. United soon completed the turnaround when Harry Maguire’s effort was diverted into his own net by Jacob Greaves. The ball had struck Maguire’s arms during the build-up, but the goal stood because Greaves was credited with the own goal.

Greaves’ difficult spell continued when he brought down Cunha inside the penalty area just three minutes later. Fernandes converted from the spot to put Michael Carrick’s team firmly in control.

The United captain completed his hat-trick after Kobbie Mainoo and Bryan Mbeumo both saw attempts blocked. Fernandes then turned provider, sending Mbeumo through with a ball over the top. The forward’s shot struck the crossbar before spinning across the line for United’s fifth.

Ipswich eventually reduced the deficit when Julio Enciso cut the ball back for half-time substitute Chuba Akpom to score.

Fernandes’ latest influential performance came in the same week he was named the Professional Footballers’ Association’s men’s player of the year following a season in which he registered a Premier League-record 21 assists.

It was his third hat-trick for United and took his overall record for the club to 113 goals in 330 appearances. His intervention was particularly important after United had lost 2-0 to Hull in their previous game.

United finished with 33 attempts, their highest total in a Premier League match since facing Burnley in October 2016. Mbeumo also struck the bar from close range after being picked out by Marcus Rashford.

Ipswich’s promising afternoon unravelled rapidly after the equaliser. Greaves’ own goal and penalty concession came within two minutes and 45 seconds, while Gary O’Neil’s side failed to register another attempt between the 49th minute and injury time as United took complete control.
