Tom Aspinall will defend his undisputed UFC Heavyweight Championship against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 on October 25 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.
This bout marks Aspinall’s first defence since being elevated to undisputed champion after Jon Jones’ retirement.
Aspinall (15-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC) became the interim champion by knocking out Sergei Pavlovich, and later defended that interim belt against Curtis Blaydes. He was promoted to undisputed champion when Jones announced his retirement.
Aspinall has waited approximately 15 months for this title defence opportunity. He has a reputation for fast finishes, with seven first-round stoppages in the UFC and 12 of his 15 wins coming via knockout.
His only UFC loss was a knee injury sustained 15 seconds into a 2022 fight against Curtis Blaydes. Aspinall has expressed confidence that this fight will be “one of the most exciting heavyweight fights ever,” citing both fighters’ elusive, fast-moving styles.
For Gane (13-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC), this will be his third attempt at the heavyweight title, after losing a unification bout against Francis Ngannou in 2022.
He later lost to Jon Jones via submission in 2023 when he was competing for the vacant UFC heavyweight title.
A former interim heavyweight champion, this may be his last chance to become champion of his division and claim the coveted title.
His last fight ended with a controversial decision victory over Alexander Volkov, a result that even UFC CEO Dana White suggested should have favoured Volkov. Despite the recent controversy, Gane is considered the top-ranked contender.
The matchup has a lot at stake for both fighters. For Aspinall, it is an opportunity to solidify his reign and send a clear message to the division.
With Jones having retired without facing Aspinall, pressure is on the British champion to deliver a decisive performance and prove that he deserves to be the top man in the division. The bout also gives Gane a chance at redemption and another pursuit of undisputed gold.
