Alvarez’s Arsenal transfer hopes grow as Atletico standoff intensifies

Julian Alvarez’s future at Atletico Madrid has become one of the biggest transfer stories of the summer, with Arsenal monitoring the situation ahead of the 1 September deadline. 

The Argentine forward was booed by Atletico supporters during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal, highlighting the growing tension surrounding his desire to leave the Spanish club.

Alvarez is reportedly keen on a move to Barcelona, but Atletico have remained firmly opposed to selling the 26-year-old to their La Liga rivals. 

The Madrid club have repeatedly insisted that Alvarez is an important part of their plans, despite growing speculation over his future. 

The hostility reached a new level at the Metropolitano, where sections of the home crowd jeered the striker before and during his appearance from the bench.

The situation has attracted Arsenal’s attention, with the Premier League champions understood to regard Alvarez as their preferred attacking target. 

Arsenal had previously kept their interest in the background because they knew the player’s priority was Barcelona, but the breakdown between Alvarez and Atletico could now create an opportunity for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arsenal are reportedly prepared to move quickly if Alvarez becomes open to joining them. Atletico are said to be seeking around €150m (£128m) for the forward, a fee Arsenal believe they can finance. 

The Gunners have already strengthened their squad this summer but, following the decision of Vinicius Jr to remain at Real Madrid, they have stepped up their efforts to explore a potential deal for Alvarez.

However, the biggest obstacle remains the player himself. Alvarez’s preference is still understood to be Barcelona, although there are indications that his position may have softened slightly as Atletico continue to block his desired move. 

Barcelona remain interested but could turn to alternative targets, including Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres, if Atletico refuse to negotiate.

Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 for a reported £81m and has scored 49 goals in 107 appearances for the Madrid club.
