Arsenal have reached the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in years, setting up a mouth-watering clash against Atletico Madrid after edging past Sporting CP with a narrow 1-0 aggregate victory.
The second leg at the Emirates Stadium ended in a tense goalless draw on Wednesday night, but Mikel Arteta’s side held firm to progress thanks to Kai Havertz’s decisive late winner from the first leg in Lisbon.
While the result keeps their European dream alive, Arsenal were far from convincing and were forced to withstand sustained pressure from a lively Sporting side.
Sporting threatened early when Morten Hjulmand pounced on a careless mistake by William Saliba, teeing up Trincao whose shot flew narrowly wide.
Viktor Gyokeres then produced a moment of magic, dipping a swerving strike just over the crossbar. As the half drew to a close, Sporting came closest yet:
Maxi Araujo slipped Catamo through, and the winger’s left-footed volley clipped the post. Minutes earlier, a rare error from goalkeeper David Raya had nearly gifted the visitors an opening.
After the break, Sporting maintained their momentum. Araujo angled another effort just off target, while Arsenal struggled to create clear chances.
Gabriel Martinelli flashed a half-volley over the bar, and substitute Noni Madueke blazed a shot into the side-netting.
Sporting felt they deserved a penalty when Cristhian Mosquera appeared to push Araujo from behind in the box, but the appeals were waved away.
With just over ten minutes remaining, Havertz rushed an attempted backheel finish. Late drama followed as Leandro Trossard headed against the woodwork from a corner, and substitute Joao Simoes powered a stoppage-time strike wide of the far post.
In the end, Arsenal’s resilience prevailed. The 1-0 aggregate scoreline may not have been pretty, but it was enough to send the north London club into the last four, where Diego Simeone’s battle-hardened Atletico Madrid await in what promises to be a fiercely contested tie.
