Tottenham Seal £85m Deal for Mateus Fernandes After Beating Manchester United to Midfielder

Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement to sign Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham in a deal worth £85 million, marking another major addition to the club’s busy summer transfer window.

Spurs secured the transfer after seeing off competition from Manchester United, who decided not to match Tottenham’s valuation. The agreed fee is a guaranteed £85 million with no add-ons, underlining the north London club’s determination to strengthen its squad ahead of the new season.

The 21-year-old emerged as Tottenham’s leading midfield target after the club failed in its attempt to sign Sandro Tonali. Spurs had submitted an £80 million offer for the Italian midfielder, but Newcastle United rejected the proposal. Tonali recently extended his contract and still has four years remaining on his deal after returning from a 10-month suspension for breaching the Football Association’s betting rules.

Fernandes attracted significant interest despite suffering back-to-back Premier League relegations. Alongside Tottenham and Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain were also monitoring the Portugal international during the summer window.

Manchester United were interested in signing Fernandes but chose to withdraw from negotiations. The club maintained its policy of only pursuing players at what it believes is the right valuation. United also questioned whether Fernandes was fully committed to joining Old Trafford, despite his agent, Jorge Mendes, holding discussions with both clubs.

Tottenham have made an impressive start to their summer recruitment. The club has already completed four signings before agreeing the Fernandes deal. Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka will join on a free transfer after his Burnley contract expires on 1 July. Defenders Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson have also arrived on free transfers from Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively, while Netherlands defender Jan Paul van Hecke was signed from Brighton for £52 million.

At Manchester United, strengthening central midfield remains a priority. The club has already agreed a £35 million deal with Atalanta for Ederson, although his arrival has been delayed following a late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad.

United’s preparations for pre-season have otherwise remained quiet. Apart from the departures of out-of-contract pair Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia, Michael Carrick’s squad is largely unchanged. Plans to sell Manuel Ugarte have been put on hold after the midfielder suffered a serious injury while on World Cup duty with Uruguay, while reports linking Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount with exits have been dismissed.
