Arsenal close to signing Gyokeres amid final add-on negotiations

Arsenal are edging closer to completing the signing of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP, with only final negotiations over add-on clauses delaying the transfer.

The deal, valued at €73.5m (£63.5m), was expected to be finalized ahead of the Gunners’ pre-season tour of Asia. However, discussions between the two clubs over performance-related bonuses have slightly prolonged the process.

The Swedish striker has already agreed personal terms with Arsenal and is set to sign a five-year contract. Manager Mikel Arteta has made acquiring a top-tier centre-forward a priority this summer, especially after missing out on RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

With Gyokeres now poised to join, Arteta looks set to strengthen his attack significantly ahead of the new Premier League season.

Gyokeres, 27, was one of Europe’s most in-demand forwards following a sensational season with Sporting, where he netted 54 goals in just 52 appearances. Since joining the Portuguese side in 2023 for around £20m, he has amassed 97 goals in 102 matches, leading them to back-to-back Primeira Liga titles.

Before his move to Portugal, Gyokeres built his reputation in the English Championship with Coventry City. He scored 43 goals in 116 games and was a standout player in the 2022–23 season, earning a place in the Championship Team of the Year.

His performances helped Coventry reach the play-off final, although they narrowly lost to Luton Town on penalties.

Arsenal have also boosted their attacking options with the recent acquisition of England winger Noni Madueke from Chelsea.

The push for a reliable goalscorer follows a campaign where the North London club finished 10 points behind Premier League champions Liverpool, scoring 17 fewer goals in the process.

Internationally, Gyokeres has made 26 appearances for Sweden, scoring 15 goals since his debut in 2019. His blend of physicality, finishing, and movement makes him a natural fit for Arteta’s high-intensity system.

If the final details are resolved in time, he could make his Arsenal debut during their upcoming Asian tour.
