Arsenal produced a stunning performance at the Emirates Stadium to sweep aside Atletico Madrid 4-0 in the Champions League, with Viktor Gyökeres grabbing a brace to seal a commanding victory.
After a goalless first half where the closest to a goal was a mistake by Arsenal keeper David Raya, almost gifted Diego Simeone’s side a goal, the second half quickly went Arsenal’s way.
The Gunners scored four goals in 13 minutes and were simply unstoppable. The breakthrough came through Gabriel in the 57th minute, who opened the scoring after sustained Arsenal pressure.
Seven minutes later, Gabriel Martinelli doubled the lead with a composed finish that left Atletico’s defence scrambling.
Gyökeres extended Arsenal’s lead with two quick goals in the 67th and 70th minutes that showcased his clinical edge.
His first came from a sweeping counterattack before he added a second with a precise low strike that sealed the contest. Arsenal’s front line, combining pace and movement, left Atletico with few answers.
Arsenal’s fluid attacking play and sharp transitions repeatedly exposed their visitors, who struggled to maintain their trademark defensive discipline.
The result places the Gunners firmly in control of their group, while Diego Simeone’s side endured one of their heaviest European defeats in recent years.
It is now three wins from three in the Champions League this season with no goals conceded.
Atletico’s frustrations boiled over as they failed to contain Arsenal’s relentless rhythm. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised his team’s composure, especially in breaking down a side known for their resilience.
The result continues Arsenal’s strong European campaign and sends a statement to their continental rivals.
With four goals, a clean sheet, and total dominance from start to finish, the Gunners proved they are genuine contenders for Champions League glory this season. They will welcome Crystal Palace to the Emirates stadium on Saturday in a Premier League fixture.
