Arsenal suffered a 3-2 defeat to Villarreal in a pre-season friendly at the Emirates Stadium, marking their second straight loss in warm-up matches.
The encounter served as the first start for summer signing Viktor Gyökeres, who led the line for the Gunners but couldn’t prevent the La Liga side from walking away with the win.
The match was played in front of a sizeable home crowd and provided Mikel Arteta’s side with a stern test just weeks before the new Premier League season.
Former Arsenal forward Nicolas Pepe opened the scoring very early before Etta Yong made it 0-2 to the Spaniards. Christian Norgaard got his first Arsenal goal before the halfway mark. Arnaut Danjuma scores in the second half to make it 3-1, while Martin Odegaard’s penalty left the match ending in a one-goal margin loss.
While Arsenal showed attacking promise, especially in the second half, lapses in defence allowed Villarreal to take their chances and secure the result.
Gyökeres, signed from Sporting CP earlier this summer, offered glimpses of the physical presence and movement that made him one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers.
However, the Swedish international appeared to still be adapting to his new surroundings and did not get on the scoresheet in his Emirates debut.
Despite Arsenal dominating possession and registering more shots after the break, they struggled to convert their pressure into goals.
Villarreal, on the other hand, remained clinical, capitalising on Arsenal’s defensive frailties to edge the match.
The defeat follows a similar pattern from Arsenal’s recent pre-season outing, in which they also fell short despite flashes of individual quality.
The performance has left some fans concerned, especially with competitive fixtures on the horizon, though pre-season results often hold little weight once the real action begins.
Among the few bright sparks was the continued emergence of 15-year-old academy talent Max Dowman.
The teenager impressed once again, drawing praise from fans and pundits alike with his composure and quality delivery from wide areas. His rapid rise has already seen calls for him to be involved in more senior matches this season.
