Arsenal Secure Tommy Setford from Ajax to Strengthen Goalkeeping Ranks

Arsenal has officially signed 18-year-old goalkeeper Tommy Setford from Ajax, in a deal reported to be worth around €1 million plus add-ons. This acquisition is seen as a strategic move to bolster the club’s academy goalkeeper options following the departure of five youth team keepers at the end of June.

Setford, born and raised in Holland, represents England at the youth level. He was part of the England under-17 squad for the World Cup in Indonesia last year, where he played alongside Arsenal’s own

Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly. Despite his Dutch origins, Setford can qualify as a homegrown player if he spends three years with an FA-affiliated club before the season in which he turns 21. His contract with Arsenal extends for four years, providing ample time for him to achieve this status.

In his first interview as an Arsenal player, Setford expressed his enthusiasm about joining the club. “I want to thank Arsenal for this opportunity. I can’t wait to hit the ground running,” he said.

Reflecting on his existing connections within the club, he added, “I already know Ethan [Nwaneri] and Myles [Lewis-Skelly]. They’re great guys and I can have a good laugh with them. I spent a few camps with them, so I know them well. I just saw them for a quick meet and greet!”

Setford’s immediate plans include integrating with his new team and getting acclimated to his surroundings. “I’m looking forward to learning new things next season and pushing myself to another level. For the short term, it’s very important now to get a feel for the group and start to know everyone,” he stated. He will have the opportunity to do just that during Arsenal’s upcoming tour of the USA.

Setford is the third goalkeeper to join Arsenal this month. The Gunners recently finalized the permanent transfer of David Raya from Brentford and also brought in Lucas Nygaard for the Academy.

Arsenal’s goalkeeping department has been undergoing significant changes, with further acquisitions expected before the transfer window closes. Arsenal is in the market for two more goalkeepers to replace Aaron Ramsdale and Karl Hein. Ramsdale, who has been overtaken by Raya as the first-choice keeper, is seeking regular first-team football, while Hein is expected to go out on loan to gain more experience.

Arsenal has already made a move for Wolves’ back-up keeper Dan Bentley, though their initial offer was rejected. Reports suggest that an improved offer has been submitted, signaling Arsenal’s intent to strengthen their goalkeeping options further.

Setford’s arrival is a clear indication of Arsenal’s commitment to investing in young talent and ensuring depth in their squad. With his youthful energy and promising potential, Setford is expected to make significant strides in his development at Arsenal.
