UEFA Champions League semi-final ended finely balanced after Atletico Madrid and Arsenal played out a tense 1-1 draw at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Wednesday night.
The first-leg encounter was packed with controversy, drama and lengthy VAR checks, leaving the tie delicately poised ahead of next week’s return leg in London.
Arsenal struck first just before half-time when Viktor Gyökeres converted a penalty in the 44th minute after the visitors were awarded a spot-kick during a tightly contested opening period.
Mikel Arteta’s side looked comfortable heading into the break with a slender advantage after frustrating Atletico’s attacking efforts for much of the first half.
The hosts responded after the interval and drew level in the 56th minute through Julián Álvarez, who calmly scored from the penalty spot to ignite the home crowd.
Atletico pushed forward in search of a winner, creating several dangerous moments, but struggled to find the decisive finish despite sustained pressure in the second half.
The biggest talking point arrived later in the match when Arsenal believed they had earned a second penalty.
After a lengthy VAR review, however, the referee overturned the original decision, sparking frustration among the visitors and debate among pundits and supporters over whether the intervention met the “clear and obvious error” threshold required for VAR involvement.
As the clock ticked down, both sides threatened to snatch a late winner. Nahuel Molina fired a powerful effort over the bar deep into stoppage time, while Arsenal also looked dangerous on the counterattack during the closing minutes.
Seven minutes of added time reflected the lengthy stoppages caused by the VAR reviews and substitutions throughout the second half.
Despite Atletico’s strong spells, Arsenal may feel more satisfied with the result as they head back to the Emirates Stadium with the aggregate score level and home advantage for the decisive second leg.
The winner of the tie will advance to the final on 30 May, where either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich await.
