Atletico Madrid knocks Manchester United out of the Champions League

La Liga side Atletico Madrid have moved into the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League after knocking out Manchester United 2-1 on aggregate.

Diego Simeone’s men were held to a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium after youngster Anthony Elanga scored late in the game to cancel Joao Felix’s opener for the home team in Spain.

However, on Tuesday evening, Atletico Madrid was able to nick a 1-0 victory against Manchester United at the Old Trafford.

The Red Devils defeated Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend with a hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo, but the Portuguese legend was silenced for the majority of the game as he recorded no shot on target.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid skipper, Koke stated that the team deserved to win in the first leg but was happy to get his team what he termed a deserved victory.

He also praised Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak calling him the best goalkeeper in the world.

“We deserved the win in the first leg but fought so hard here to get what we deserved from this tie. We want to go far in the competition, and it’s incredible to still be in it. It’s important for us to still be in the Champions League in what’s an up-and-down season. For me, Jan Oblak is the best goalkeeper in the world. He’s shown it once again tonight.” Koke said.

Meanwhile, Atletico joins Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Benfica in the Quarterfinals of the UEFA champions league.

Meanwhile, there are two more UEFA Champions League quarter-final places still to be confirmed as matches would continue on Wednesday as Juventus hosts Villarreal in Turin, while Chelsea travels to France to face Lille.

Juventus and Villarreal have a 1-1 aggregate scoreline, while Chelsea have a 2-0 advantage against their French counterparts.
