Aubameyang reveals goal target against Lyon after victory over Marseille

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was thinking about a hat-trick after scoring twice to secure a 3–2 victory for Olympique de Marseille against Olympique Lyonnais in Sunday night’s Olympico at the Orange Vélodrome.

Lyon had taken the lead twice at the home of their hosts before Marseille rallied through a brace from the Gabonese striker to secure an important three points for them in their quest for Champions League football next season.

The veteran striker, who returned to the club from Saudi Arabia, turned the tie around late for the hosts within ten minutes.

Aubameyang first restored parity for Marseille before arriving at the far post moments later to complete the comeback.

Aubameyang said the team is delighted with the victory in a stadium that was absolutely electric.

He further stated that his belief in the team remained strong that they can turn it around despite Lyon’s second goal, as he even thought he might score a hat-trick.

“ It might sound crazy, but the match was open. I kept convincing myself and kept making the effort.”

Reacting to the win,  coach Habib Beye, who has now won his first game for the club, lauded Aubameyang for his performance and mentality, saying it’s incredible, especially the love he has for the game and his presence in front of goal.

Beye further stated that the former Gabon international proved his mettle by playing for 95 minutes pressing the opponent, defending, and eventually scoring a brace.

Highlighting the patience required of experienced forwards, the tactician said an attacker may have no opportunity until the 80th minute, and then suddenly he has two and scores both, saying the strength of an experienced striker like Aubameyang is to stay in the match and take the chances.

The 36-year-old is Marseille’s oldest goalscorer in Ligue 1 since Larbi Ben Barek in 1955.
