Chelsea have intensified their pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix following a fresh round of positive discussions between the two clubs over a potential transfer.
The proposed move is being handled at ownership level, with the latest talks described as encouraging as Chelsea push to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season. Lacroix has emerged as one of the club’s priority targets during the summer transfer window, with the west London side focusing on recruiting players who already have Premier League experience.
Crystal Palace remain keen to keep the 26-year-old centre-back and have attempted to tie him down to a new contract. However, despite having three years remaining on his current deal, Lacroix is understood to be seeking a fresh challenge, opening the door to a possible move away from Selhurst Park.
Palace are expected to demand at least £60 million before agreeing to part ways with the defender. As uncertainty over his future continues, the club have already begun exploring potential replacements. Among the players being monitored is Augsburg defender Chrislain Matsima as Palace prepare for the possibility of Lacroix’s departure.
Lacroix has established himself as a key figure since joining Crystal Palace from Wolfsburg in August 2024 in a deal worth up to £18 million. Since arriving in England, he has made 98 appearances for the club and has developed into one of the Premier League’s highly regarded central defenders. The France international, who represented his country at the World Cup, has attracted growing interest with his performances.
Chelsea’s transfer activity is not limited to reinforcing the back line. The club are also closing in on a £117 million deal for Aston Villa attacker Morgan Rogers, underlining their ambition to strengthen multiple areas of the squad before the campaign begins.
A successful move for Lacroix could also have implications for Chelsea’s current defensive group. The future of Trevoh Chalobah is likely to come under increased scrutiny if the deal is completed, with the defender attracting interest from Italian side Como.
Negotiations between Chelsea and Crystal Palace are continuing, with both clubs working towards a potential agreement as Chelsea attempt to secure one of their leading defensive targets of the transfer window.
