Former Barcelona midfielder Gaizka Mendieta has warned that constant comparisons between Lamine Yamal and Lionel Messi risk placing “unnecessary pressure” on the teenage sensation.
Yamal, who has emerged as one of Barcelona’s brightest prospects, is only 18, yet he continues to be positioned as the natural heir to Messi’s legacy, a narrative that Mendieta believes does more harm than good to the winger’s development.
Since rising through La Masia, Yamal has often been discussed as Barcelona’s “next Messi”, largely due to his left-footed flair and fearless attacking style.
Despite rewriting several age-related records and becoming one of LaLiga’s most exciting talents, he has repeatedly insisted that he has no desire to imitate the Argentine icon.
Instead, he aims to carve out his own identity in the game, free from the constant comparisons that have overshadowed other young prospects before him.
Mendieta stressed that the expectations surrounding Yamal are unrealistic, noting that players of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s calibre appear perhaps “once every 20, 30 or even 40 years”.
He warned that imposing such standards on an 18-year-old, still growing physically and mentally, creates pressure that could derail even the most promising career.
Citing examples such as Ansu Fati and Munir El Haddadi, Mendieta highlighted how similar labels in the past failed to help young stars reach elite longevity.
On the pitch, Yamal continues to benefit from the support of experienced teammates, including Marcus Rashford, who has impressed during his loan spell from Manchester United. Rashford has contributed crucial assists and goals, becoming a valuable part of Hansi Flick’s attack.
Mendieta also noted that Rashford has benefited from a fresh start in Barcelona, particularly with Raphinha’s recent injury creating consistent playing time.
The England international has reportedly enjoyed the quieter lifestyle in Catalonia and has adapted well to Barcelona’s tactical system.
Both Yamal and Rashford are expected to play key roles as Barcelona continue their title defence, having climbed to the top of LaLiga during a dip in Real Madrid’s form.
Their next major test resulted in a victory against Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou, where Hansi Flick’s side won 3-1 to maintain their momentum.
