Igor Thiago, Haaland’s unlikely competitor

Brentford striker Igor Thiago has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most destructive forwards this season, rapidly transforming from a relatively unknown talent into a challenger to Erling Haaland for the Golden Boot. 

The 24-year-old has scored 11 goals in 13 league appearances, almost single-handedly powering Brentford into the top half despite a turbulent summer that saw the departures of Bryan Mbeumo, Yoane Wissa, Christian Norgaard, and long-serving manager Thomas Frank.

New boss Keith Andrews has maintained the club’s direct, intense style of play, placing full trust in Thiago to lead the line, and the Brazilian has rewarded that faith spectacularly.

Raised in Gama, Brazil, he began playing relatively late and worked as a grocery carrier and bricklayer after losing his father at age 13. 

Cruzeiro eventually offered him his first break, before a prolific spell with Ludogorets in Bulgaria and then a record transfer to Club Brugge in 2023. 

His 29 goals for Brugge in the 2023–24 season confirmed him as one of Europe’s most potent young forwards and attracted Brentford, who signed him for £30 million that summer as a long-term replacement for Ivan Toney.

However, Thiago’s first year in England was plagued by misfortune. He suffered a meniscus injury in his first pre-season appearance and later endured a rare knee infection, limiting him to cameo appearances across the 2024–25 campaign. 

Instead of viewing the season as a setback, Thiago described it as a “learning experience”, insisting that the adaptation to English football and understanding of his body prepared him for a stronger return.

Thiago scored Brentford’s first goal under Andrews in pre-season and has been virtually unstoppable since the new Premier League season kicked off. 

He stunned Manchester United with a devastating brace in a 3-1 win, delivered a decisive strike against Liverpool, and produced further doubles against Newcastle and Burnley. 

The striker is now closing in on history. His tally includes a league-high five penalties, but he also ranks among the leaders for goals from open play and shots on target. 

Thiago sits just four goals away from matching the record for the most goals by a Brazilian in a single Premier League season, currently held jointly by Roberto Firmino, Gabriel Martinelli, and Matheus Cunha.
