Serena sparks comeback rumours with testing pool re-entry

23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams has made a move that fans have taken as a sign that she’s considering a comeback to the sport.

It was reported on Tuesday that the American had re-entered the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) testing pool.

The significance of this update lies in the fact that only active players get to be in the testing pool. Williams had “announced” her retirement back in 2022, and that was the last year she was eligible for testing, before now.

While she has not given any follow-up comment to this, it’s not far-fetched to think she may be considering returning to professional tennis. The 44-year-old had bowed out after failing to capture her 24th Grand Slam title.

At her current age, it’s unlikely she would achieve that feat now if she returns to the sport. But maybe her supposed return goes beyond seeking a title.

Just this year, her elder sister, Venus, shocked the world by making an appearance at the DC Open and showing up at two other events.

While she did not exactly make a mark in any of them, she felt good, nonetheless, taking part in a sport that she and her sister had dominated for many years.

For a retired player like Serena, she would have to be in the testing pool for a minimum of six months before returning to the court, as confirmed by an ITIA spokesperson.

As her name showed up on the list from October this year, it means April 2026 is the earliest she would play a match, if at all she’s back from retirement.

At the moment, there’s no confirmation on why Serena entered the pool again or what her future plans are. She’s not mentioned anything about a possible comeback, so it’s a bit hard to pin down what her next moves might be. Still, it’s refreshing to entertain the thought of Serena getting back on court one more time.
