Rybakina to end year as world number one

Elena Rybakina will finish 2026 as the WTA world number one, converting a season of major success into the most important ranking achievement of her career.

The 27-year-old sealed the year-end top spot by beating fellow Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 16 at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, a victory that left world number two Aryna Sabalenka unable to overtake her before the season ends.

Rybakina becomes the 17th woman in WTA history to finish a season at number one and the first player representing Kazakhstan, male or female, to reach the year-end summit in singles or doubles.

It is a historic distinction for a country whose tennis profile has grown steadily, and for a player who first won a Grand Slam at Wimbledon in 2022.

Her 2026 campaign was built around two major titles. She began the year by defeating Sabalenka in the Australian Open final in Melbourne, recovering from 3-0 down in the deciding set to claim her second Grand Slam crown.

In September, she beat Sabalenka again in the US Open final, adding a third major title and rising to number one for the first time.

The American triumph was the turning point for her. Rybakina replaced Sabalenka at the top of the rankings after her quarter-final win over Zheng Qinwen in New York, ending the Belarusian’s 99-week run as world number one.

Beyond the majors, Rybakina won the WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart and successfully defended her title at the Ningbo Open.

Her victory in Ningbo was her fourth of the season, the most on the WTA Tour in 2026, and her first successful title defence.

She also reached six singles finals, including runner-up finishes at Indian Wells and Toronto, showing that her results extended well beyond the biggest stages.

Rybakina will receive the Chris Evert WTA No. 1 Trophy at the WTA Finals in Indian Wells, where she will also defend the title she won in Riyadh in 2025.

Ending the year at number one places Rybakina alongside Steffi Graf, Serena Williams, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Iga Swiatek and Sabalenka among the players who have closed a season atop the WTA rankings
