Bayern star Raphaël Guerreiro consider immediate retirement

Bayern Munich defender Raphaël Guerreiro is reportedly contemplating an immediate retirement from professional football.

The 32-year-old versatile full-back is said to be weighing up hanging up his boots after this Saturday’s DFB-Pokal final against VfB Stuttgart.

Persistent injury struggles in the latter stages of his career have clearly taken a significant physical and mental toll.

Having to repeatedly rebuild match fitness appears to have drained the Portuguese international, prompting serious thoughts about calling time on a respected playing career.

Notably, there are no active transfer rumours linking Guerreiro with a move elsewhere, which may have simplified his decision-making process.

At 32, the timing feels natural for reflection after more than a decade at the highest level in European football.

Guerreiro first arrived in the Bundesliga in June 2016, signing for Borussia Dortmund from French club Lorient in a €12 million deal.

During his time at Signal Iduna Park, he established himself as a reliable and technically gifted player, contributing to two DFB-Pokal triumphs with BVB.

In 2023, he joined Bayern Munich as a free agent on a three-year contract. His move to the Bavarian giants proved successful on the domestic front.

Guerreiro played his part in securing two Bundesliga titles during the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons, along with the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.

Known for his composure on the ball, positional versatility, capable of playing as a left-back, central midfielder, or even further forward, and intelligent reading of the game, Guerreiro earned admiration across German football for his professionalism and adaptability.

Should he decide to retire this weekend, it would mark the end of a solid career that saw him transition successfully from Ligue 1 to becoming a title-winner in one of Europe’s toughest leagues.

Fans and teammates will no doubt reflect on his contributions as the Pokal final offers one potential last hurrah in a Bayern shirt.
