Bayern teenage sensation earns maiden Germany call-up as Musiala misses out

Bayern Munich’s sensational young talent Lennart Karl is poised to receive his first senior call-up to the German national team, rewarding his exceptional breakout season under coach Julian Nagelsmann.

The 18-year-old attacking midfielder has been in scintillating form, netting seven goals and delivering five assists in 32 appearances across all competitions this campaign. Karl only turned professional in the summer but has quickly made history.

He became Bayern’s youngest-ever goalscorer in the UEFA Champions League with a strike against Club Brugge, surpassing Jamal Musiala’s previous record.

He followed that up by scoring in successive Champions League matches against Arsenal and Sporting CP, becoming the youngest player in competition history to find the net in three consecutive games, a feat that eclipsed even Kylian Mbappé’s earlier mark.

Karl’s rapid rise has caught the eye of national team boss Nagelsmann, who is set to hand the Frammersbach-born star his debut in the upcoming internationals against Switzerland and Ghana.

This call-up opportunity arises partly due to an injury setback for Jamal Musiala.

The 23-year-old Bayern playmaker missed Saturday’s 1-1 Bundesliga draw with Bayer Leverkusen because of an ankle problem, which saw him sidelined for the Champions League game against Atalanta and potentially missing the league clash with Union Berlin on Matchday 27.

Musiala’s most recent appearance for Germany dates back to March 2025, and he will now have to delay his return to the national fold as a precautionary measure.

Karl, who wears the iconic No. 42 shirt previously donned by Musiala, has already debuted for Germany’s U21 side and is targeting bigger things, including a potential spot at the 2026 World Cup.

His focus remains on performing consistently at Bayern, where his creativity and goal threat have made him one of Europe’s most exciting young prospects.
