Benzema’s late winner moves Real Madrid closer to La Liga title

Karim Benzema scored a late goal into stoppage time as Real Madrid secured a comeback win with a 3-2 victory over Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on Sunday.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti had envisaged a tough game before the start of the match, and he was quite proven right when Sevilla went into an early lead.

Former Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic scored in the 21st minute before ex-sports player Erik Lamela doubled the lead 3 minutes later. While Real Madrid went into the break with a 2-0 deficit, they took the second last more strongly as they scored just five minutes into the second half.

Rodrygo started the comeback, but the second goal didn’t come until 8 minutes left to play when Nacho leveled the score.

Karim Benzema then scored his seventh goal in the last five games with a 92nd-minute effort to win the game and put Real Madrid 15 points above second-placed Barcelona, who has two games still to play.

Meanwhile, with six games left to be played, Carlo Ancellotti has given an idea of the mindset every Real Madrid players have going into each match left in the league in the presser before the Sevilla game.

“We need to win and get the three points because the LaLiga title race isn’t over. Everyone is waiting for us to slip up, and that hasn’t happened as yet. The LaLiga title race is still wide open. We’ve got an advantage, but we want to pick up the points tomorrow and in our next games between now and the end of the season”. Ancelotti said.

Real Madrid is still in the race for the double after getting a 5-4 aggregate victory over Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

They will now face Manchester City on April 24 in the semifinals, while their next game is a midweek La Liga game against Osasuna.
