Borussia Dortmund target Karetsas as Brandt replacement

Borussia Dortmund are considering a move for highly-rated 18-year-old attacking midfielder Konstantinos Karetsas from Belgian side KRC Genk, according to reports in Germany.

The youngster has emerged as the club’s preferred choice to succeed Julian Brandt, who departed after the expiration of his contract.

Karetsas is reportedly open to joining Dortmund, but the primary hurdle remains Genk’s ambitious €35 million valuation.

To help finance the potential transfer, BVB could rely on income from Karim Adeyemi’s expected departure to Barcelona.

The sale of the forward could generate up to €29 million for Dortmund, including performance-related bonuses.

Last season, Karetsas impressed with 18 assists and three goals across 49 appearances for Genk, showcasing his creativity and vision in the final third.

The Greek international has already earned 10 senior caps for his country, contributing three goals and one assist.

His technical ability, maturity, and goal involvement at such a young age have drawn significant interest from top European clubs.

In a separate development, Borussia Dortmund are in no hurry to open contract extension talks with head coach Niko Kovac.

The German tactician is entering the final year of his current deal, yet club management remains satisfied with his performance.

Officials are prioritizing the strengthening of the squad for the upcoming campaign, confident that Kovac’s focus on squad development aligns with the club’s ambitions.

The potential arrival of Karetsas would inject youthful energy and creativity into Dortmund’s midfield, fitting their strategy of investing in promising talents.

While negotiations with Genk are expected to be challenging due to the high asking price, the club’s financial boost from outgoing transfers could prove decisive.

Fans will be watching closely to see if this young Greek star becomes the next standout addition at Signal Iduna Park.
