Italian Federation woos Pep Guardiola for vacant post

Pep Guardiola has reportedly been approached by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) to become the next head coach of the national team following face-to-face talks in Barcelona.

According to reports from Italy, football legends Paolo Maldini and Leonardo met with the former Manchester City manager to discuss the possibility of taking charge of the Azzurri as they search for a new manager.

Italy have identified Guardiola as their preferred candidate after the departure of Gennaro Gattuso. 

Reports suggest the meeting between Guardiola, Maldini, and Leonardo extended beyond an initial discussion, with the federation eager to convince the Spanish tactician to return to management and lead the four-time world champions into a new era.

Despite the interest, Guardiola’s ongoing sabbatical remains the biggest obstacle to any potential appointment. 

The 55-year-old has repeatedly stated that he is enjoying life away from football after leaving Manchester City, insisting he has no immediate desire to return to the touchline. 

Guardiola has said he wants to spend more time with his family and focus on life outside the pressures of management.

The Italian federation is therefore keeping its options open as it awaits Guardiola’s decision. 

Former Italy boss Roberto Mancini, Juventus legend Andrea Pirlo, and Antonio Conte have all been linked with the vacancy, with reports suggesting Conte is also a strong contender for the role if Guardiola declines the offer.

Guardiola’s availability has also attracted attention from other national teams. Following England’s disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign, several former players and pundits have suggested the Spaniard as a potential successor to Thomas Tuchel should the Football Association decide to make a managerial change.

For now, Italy’s pursuit of Guardiola remains uncertain, with the federation hoping to persuade one of football’s most successful coaches to cut short his sabbatical. 

Until a final decision is made, the Azzurri are expected to continue exploring alternative candidates as they seek the right manager to revive the national team after recent disappointments on the international stage.
