Lucas Digne set for a return to PSG

France international left-back Lucas Digne will return to Paris Saint-Germain after a successful season with Aston Villa.

The left-back had spent two seasons in the French capital over a decade ago, and will therefore be returning to the club after PSG triggered his release clause.

According to  L’Equipe, Digne, who turns 33 on Monday, will undergo a medical with the back-to-back UEFA Champions League winners before penning a three-year deal with Les Parisiens.

With Digne’s release clause, valued at €10m, it is an easy bargain for the European champions.

The Frenchman will act as Nuno Mendes’ back-up in Luis Enrique’s squad.

This is a reunion for Digne and Enrique ten years after he spent the 2016-2017 season under his tutelage at Barcelona.

Digne will join Aston Villa as an Europa League winner, having joined the Birmingham-based club in 2022 from Premier League rivals Everton.

The experienced defender is expected to be a value to PSG for at least another two seasons and could go into coaching as his career nears its end.

He becomes a further reinforcement for a squad that will be competing on all fronts next season, with the UEFA Super Cup clash against Aston Villa among the top fixtures.

PSG are also reportedly interested in signing Ferran Torres and have made the Spanish striker their number one choice.

PSG will need to fill the void left by Goncalo Ramos, who left for AC Milan, and Randal Kolo Muani is also seeking a move away from the club, as the striker seems not to be in Enrique’s plan.

With this signing, it is expected that PSG will make some reinforcements to the squad after some exits ahead of the new season.

With the World Cup now over, things could move more quickly in the transfer market for the European champions.
