Brighton Cruise Past Chelsea to Go Sixth as Pressure Mounts on Rosenior

Brighton delivered one of their most convincing performances of the season with a 3-0 victory over Chelsea, climbing above their rivals into sixth place in the Premier League and strengthening their push for European football.

The Seagulls took control from the opening moments and never allowed Chelsea to settle. Within two minutes, Kaoru Mitoma nearly produced a repeat of his goal at Tottenham from the previous weekend, meeting Pascal Gross’ shot with a first-time volley, only for Robert Sanchez to deny him.

From the corner that followed, Brighton struck. Ferdi Kadioglu reacted quickest after Jorrel Hato failed to clear Gross’ delivery properly, drilling a low volley home in the third minute to send the home crowd into celebration.

That early breakthrough set the tone for a one-sided contest. Brighton kept pressing and carving out chances, with Jan Paul van Hecke seeing a header saved, Jack Hinshelwood having an effort cleared off the line after a poor pass from Sanchez, and Georginio Rutter firing over from inside the area.

Chelsea, by contrast, offered almost nothing in attack for long periods. The visitors managed only one attempt in the opening 40 minutes, a blocked effort from Trevoh Chalobah on the edge of the area. Their lack of threat drew a sarcastic response from the away end, with supporters chanting, “we’ve had a shot” after Romeo Lavia fired wide soon after the restart.

Brighton soon made their dominance count again. In the 56th minute, Hinshelwood found the finish he had earlier been denied, sweeping in Brighton’s second from a pass by Rutter to effectively put the result beyond doubt.

Chelsea did have late opportunities through substitutes Alejandro Garnacho and Marc Guiu, but both sent their efforts wide. Brighton, meanwhile, looked the more likely side to add to the scoreline, with Kadioglu forcing two more saves before the hosts struck again near the end.

The third goal came from two substitutes, as Maxim de Cuyper broke down the left and picked out Danny Welbeck, who fired emphatically into the roof of the net for his 13th goal of the season.

It capped a memorable evening for Brighton, who leapfrogged Chelsea into sixth and further boosted their hopes of securing European football next season. For Chelsea, the defeat deepened an alarming run, with the side now having lost five straight league matches without scoring for the first time since 1912. Frustration is growing, and pressure is building fast around head coach Liam Rosenior.
