Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has confirmed his departure from the club after five years, following the expiration of his contract.
Wilson, 33, thanked the fans and the club for their support during his time at St James’ Park, saying, “To all you Magpies, it’s time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years at the Toon.”
He scored 49 goals in 130 appearances for Newcastle, playing a significant role in the team’s success in recent years.
Wilson joined Newcastle from Bournemouth in 2020 for around £20 million but struggled with injuries during his time at the club.
Despite this, he was instrumental in Newcastle’s EFL Cup win against Liverpool, coming off the bench to help seal the victory. Wilson’s contributions to the team will be remembered, with Newcastle thanking him for his service.
In his farewell statement, Wilson expressed his pride in wearing the iconic number 9 shirt and added, “Scoring at the Gallowgate End really is as special as they say.” He also acknowledged that Newcastle United will always hold a special place in his and his family’s hearts.
Several Premier League clubs, including Leeds United, Everton, and West Ham United, are reportedly interested in signing Wilson as a free agent.
Leeds United, newly promoted to the Premier League, might find Wilson’s experience and goal-scoring ability appealing, especially with some of their current strikers potentially leaving the club.
Wilson’s departure marks the end of an era for Newcastle, with the club wishing him well in his future endeavors. His legacy at Newcastle will be remembered for his goals and contributions to the team’s success.
The 33-year-old striker now looks forward to a new challenge, potentially in the Premier League or Major League Soccer. His decision to leave Newcastle comes after failing to agree on a new contract, and he will be seeking a fresh start with another club.
