Celtic push to hijack Nkounkou deal as plans in race to secure top signing

Celtic are intensifying their interest in Eintracht Frankfurt left-back Niels Nkounkou, seeking to complete a rapid transfer that would undercut OGC Nice’s ongoing efforts to secure the 25-year-old French defender.

The reigning Scottish Premiership champions view the versatile full-back as a potential reinforcement for their squad and are understood to be advancing talks in the hope of striking a deal before Nice can finalize theirs.

Reports indicate that the Ligue 1 side had already reached a personal agreement with Nkounkou over terms.

However, Nice’s willingness to complete the move remains dependent on the departure of their own left-back Melvin Bard.

With that exit yet to be confirmed, the French club has been unable to progress the transfer as planned.

Celtic are now looking to take advantage of the delay. The Glasgow club is reportedly prepared to move quickly, capitalizing on Nice’s hesitation to present Nkounkou with an alternative destination.

A swift agreement could see the player switch to the Scottish champions in the near future, providing Celtic with added depth and competition on the left flank.

Nkounkou spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Torino in Serie A. During his time in Italy, he made 14 appearances and contributed one assist, offering a steady if understated contribution to the Turin side.

The experience of regular top-flight football is expected to have sharpened his readiness for a permanent move.

Whether Celtic can successfully hijack the deal remains to be seen, but their determination to act fast has placed them firmly in the frame.

For Nkounkou, the interest from two ambitious clubs underscores his value as a reliable defensive option capable of contributing at a high level.
