Chelsea confirms Xabi Alonso as new manager

Xabi Alonso has been appointed as the new manager of Chelsea on a four-year contract beginning in July, ending months of speculation over who would take charge at Stamford Bridge.

The former Liverpool midfielder arrives after leaving Real Madrid by mutual consent in January, less than a year into his previous deal.

Chelsea confirmed Alonso’s appointment just one day after their defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final. 

The club hope the 44-year-old can restore stability following a turbulent season that saw both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior leave their roles as permanent managers, while interim coach Calum McFarlane remains in temporary charge for the final two league matches.

In his first statement as Chelsea boss, Alonso spoke of his excitement at taking over one of football’s biggest clubs and outlined his ambition to build a trophy-winning side. 

“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.” Alonso said.

Alonso arrives in London with a growing reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches after a highly successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen. 

During his time in Germany, he guided the club to their first-ever Bundesliga title and completed a domestic double by also winning the German Cup in 2024. 

His achievements quickly established him as one of the most sought-after managers in European football.

As a player, Alonso enjoyed a decorated career with clubs including Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Real Sociedad. 

He also earned 114 caps for the Spain national football team, winning the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships during one of the nation’s most successful eras.

Chelsea’s hierarchy believe Alonso’s leadership, tactical intelligence, and high-profile playing career can help rebuild confidence around the club after a disappointing campaign. 

The Blues currently sit ninth in the Premier League and still face the possibility of missing out on European qualification entirely, but the arrival of Alonso is expected to mark the beginning of a major rebuild aimed at returning Chelsea to regular title contention and Champions League football.
