Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella admitted that he knew nothing about current teammate Enzo Fernandez during the Qatar World Cup

In a shocking turn of events, Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella admitted that he had to do a Google check on Enzo Fernandez during the FIFA World Cup. The Spaniard was not aware who he was and where he played.

Fernandez was more of a backup midfielder for Lionel Scaloni as he had never started a game for Argentina before the World Cup. He was a substitute in their first game against Saudi Arabia which they lost.

But since then Fernandez started the next six games and they started winning. He even scored a thunderous goal against Mexico to keep their World Cup hopes alive. Later he went on to lift the prestigious trophy with Argentina and it might have felt like a dream.

However Ferandez’ s performance grabbed a lot of eyeballs and most people who didn’t know him were keen to make a Google search and learn more about the Argentine midfielder.

Cucurella was one of those people but he revealed that he was very impressed witht he way Fernandez played during the World Cup. Cucurella was mostly inclined to follow Argentina because he wanted to follow his former Brighton teammate Alexis Mac Allister.

It was during this time the Spanish left-back came to know about Fernandez and was very impressed. He admitted making a Google search to know more about the Argentine midfielder. “I liked to watch matches in which my friends were playing, so I was watching Argentina because of Alexis. I think I said, “I really like number 24, he’s very good!’. But I didn’t even know where he played! I had to go and search on my phone!

However Cucurella started following Fernandez in his journey and developed a liking for the Argentina, who was having a stellar campaign for La Albiceleste. The Spaniard opened up on how he praised Fernandez in front of his family and friends and told that he will be a big star in coming.

“As I watched more games, I told my family and friends that I really liked him a lot. And then he came to Chelsea! told Enzo that I had liked him at the World Cup. He’s a good guy, I’m waiting for him to cook me a barbeque,” the Chelsea left-back added.

Enzo Fernandez joined SL Benfica from River Plate in the summer of 2022 and his heroics at the World Cup and before that for Benfica helped him bag the British-record fee of £106.8 million from Chelsea in January.

The Argentine midfielder has already settled in London and has started in all seven matches ever since he arrived on deadline day in January. While Chelsea aren’t doing that great in the Premier League, Fernandez’s performances have earned major plaudits from fans and experts.
